After the 1979 revolution, Iran disappeared from the international new music scene, but recently there has been a remarkable revival. The first edition of the Tehran Contemporary Music Festival (April 2016) was a milestone, with Iranian musicians playing together with foreign musicians, including musicians of HERMESensemble.
Emruz looks at what is happening there today.
EMRUZ starts with Hafez’ fascinating 14th-century poetry. Within a visual framework created by the photographer and video artist Sam Asaert, we hear new work by 4 contemporary Iranian composers and the Belgian Jean-Luc Fafchamps.
The HERMESensemble and Centre Henri Pousseur invites them to make old verses new. Expect to hear contemporary and highly individual works that are rooted in the rich Iranian tradition as well as in the electronic music of our time.
