Wim Henderickx wrote DISAPPEARING IN LIGHT in 2007, when he was composer-in-residence at HERMESensemble. The piece marks the beginning of the intense collaboration between composer and ensemble.

The composition consists of three main parts – Darkness , Meditation and Light -, and two interludes. Wim Henderickx referred to non-Western traditions in his approach to light and darkness, and his composition is based on the tantric mode.

As part of a preparatory project for the musical theatre INNER LIFE, which will premiere in September 2024, two movements will be musically explored and performed. INNER LIFE is as much a composition as an alchemical formula – or a play. It is a recipe for an artistic experiment in which all possible musical personalities and groups can participate.

The music scores are partly through-composed, partly open-ended. Precisely notated in some places, graphically rendered in others. The piece is ‘web-structured’: on the one hand, it consists of musical objects – some melodic, some timbral in nature, some concrete, others aleatory. On the other hand, various ‘performance strategies’ or paths are suggested.

Wim Henderickx was still fully engaged in the composition and finishing of INNER LIFE when he unexpectedly passed away at the end of 2022. Through musical exploration, HERMESensemble and Nemá´“ ensemble work step by step towards a creation.
