In 2013 the young composer, Daan Janssens, from Ghent, completed his doctorate. He carried out research into thematic transformations as a composing technique.

“Thematic transformations” refers to the phenomenon in which a musical theme is modified in such a way that it becomes and sounds different, despite being constructed from the same elements.

Daan Janssens worked out the conclusions of his research into this phenomenon throughout modern music history to create an artistic artefact: an original composition written for and in collaboration with HERMESensemble.
